Zungeru was Lord Lugardís northern capital. There are still a few signs of his occupation left, including the old bridge across a tributary of the Kaduna River, the old garrison church, some war-graves and the ruins of some buildings. We were informed that it was only possible to see the ruins properly in the dry season, as at the time we wanted to visit them, the grass was too high. This is not a tourist site, but it is of interest to historians.

If you are passing that way there is a scenic bridge across the Kaduna River which passes through a gorge with curious rock formations. The old bridge is shared by motor vehicles and the railway, which is somewhat unusual, but a new road-bridge was opened at the end of 1989 a few kilometers further north on the Tegina Ė Minna road. The direct route no longer goes through Zungeru. There are plans to dam the Kaduna River near Zungeru. If these plans are carried out, Zungeru may change from a quiet town, to that of a bustling industrial area.
