Chafe is mentioned only because of its market which is held on a Sunday. It is 128km from Zaria on the Sokoto road between Funtua and Gusau. It is a traditional Fulani market and apart the interesting variety of livestock, both leather workers and calabash carvers can be seen at work. Fulani hats and their decorative rugs are also on sale.

Also, many Fulani come to the market dress which makes it a colourful sight. You may chance upon a Fulani bride-choosing ceremony or their manhood-proving cantests when the young men beat each other with sticks, and vie to become ‘the bravest of the brave ‘. We have witnessed both in our travels, although neither was in Chafe.

The Fulani do not seem to mind being photographed; it enhances their reputation for good looks, but it is always better to ask first. Like many of the other fascinating Mrkets in the north, it it well worth a viit if you are passing through Chafe on a Sunday.
