SUPER EAGLES STAR "DISGRACES" HIS MOTHER ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN DAY

Super Eagles star ‘disgraces’ his mother on International Women’s day
2014 Champions Atletico Madrid kept up their pursuit of La Liga leaders Barcelona by beating Leganes 1-0 at home on Saturday as coach Diego Simeone rotated his squad in preparation for next week’s Champions League game against Juventus. Midfielder Saul Niguez struck the only goal of the match, following up to score on the rebound in the 50th minute after his penalty was saved.

Atletico, who travel to Serie A champions Juventus on Tuesday defending a 2-0 lead in the last-16 second leg, were without first-choice defenders Lucas Hernandez, Diego Godin and Filipe Luis, allowing 21-year-old Colombian full back Andres Solano to make his debut. The game was more or less another La Liga game but was special for so many reasons.

For the first time in his professional career, Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo had his mother’s name at the back of his jersey during a game.  This happened while he was in action for Leganes in a La Liga game away at Atletico Madrid. ‘Onyeoma’ was emblazoned at the back of Omeruo’s jersey to pay tribute to his mother in marking of the 2019 International Women’s Day.

March 8 is set out annually to commemorate the struggle for women’s rights. The theme for 2019 International Women’s Day is #BalanceforBetter which is aimed at gender equality, a greater awareness of discrimination and a celebration of women’s achievements. The Super Eagles star, Omeruo wasn’t alone with this as the whole Leganes team took to the pitch at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium with the names of their respective mothers emblazoned across the back of their jerseys.

The Nigerian defender impressed in his usual role in the centre of a three-man defence. He was his usual composed self and defended well all through the game. But he ruined his day by conceding a penalty after he was adjourned to have fouled Angel Correa in the box. Saul’s initial kick was saved by Leganes goalkeeper Andriy Lunin but the Atletico forward was able to follow up on the rebound to score.

Omeruo made his 20th Liga appearance of the season in the 1-0 defeat to Rojiblancos, but the visitor’s defensive display wasn’t the only thing that caught the eyes. The Super Eagles star was born in Kaduna, in the Northern region of Nigeria but hails from Abia state in the South-Eastern part of the country. The Chelsea loanee wore his “Onyeoma”, meaning “Good Person” on the back of his shirt to pay an amazing tribute to his mother on International Women’s day.

Although the defender conceded the penalty that cost his side all three points, we believe that his mother must be so proud of him as the Nigerian star started his career from the bottom and made it to Sunshine Stars in the Nigerian Premier League before traveling abroad to play for Belgian side, Anderlecht and Standard Liege. He was signed by Chelsea who has loaned him to several clubs including Middlesbrough, Kasimpasa, and Leganes.
