JULIUS AGHAHOWA Football gave me everything in life

Former Super Eagles striker Julius Aghahowa has done pretty well for himself almost six years into retirement from professional football.

Aghahowa announced his retirement from the game in April 2013, after his second playing journey to Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine.

Known for his signature multiple-flip-celebration after scoring, Aghahowa played 32 matches and scored 14 goals for the Nigerian national team, including their only goal at the 2002 World Cup against Sweden. He was Nigeriaís top scorer at the 2002 African Cup of Nations. He also played at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

He could be remembered for his come-backing goals for Eagles in the semi-final match against Senegal at the Ghana/Nigeria Africa Cup of Nations Championship.

For a rookie who made up the number from the bench, it was a special way to announce him.

Down one goal to Senegal with three minutes to end of the match, Aghahowa outwitted Senegalís last man, latching onto a Sunday Olisehís long ball to fire low for the equaliser. Sending the full capacity Lagos National Stadium into an eruption, he scored the winner in extra time to send Nigeria into the final against Cameroon.

The second goal sent hundreds of over joy Nigerians crashing into the main pitch and holding up the game for some minutes.

Now in retirement, Aghahowa still believes that goal would remain his best. ďI was ready to prove myself and that goal was special for me. It came at the nick of time and proving self meant that I kept my cool and slotted in the goal at the right time,Ē noted Aghahowa in a recent interview.

The second goal was even more difficult, coming in between two defenders and the goalkeeper; he deftly controlled the ball with the right and slotted into the right corner with the left, all within a moment.

The footballer turned businessman said he has settled nicely into retirement, but gives credit to the round leather game for the fame, money, and the good life heís living in retirement.

Aghahowa spoke to correspondent, AL-AMIN IBRAHIM, about life in retirement, family and running his business in this captivating interview. ExcerptsÖ

Life after football

Well, it depends on individuals. Some people after football go into coaching and some people after football they go into business while some other people once they retire that is the end. As for me, after football I decided to go into business. While I was still playing I got into real estate business and upon retirement I decided to take it to a higher level. I did not want to idle because Iíve always been the up and doing type. It would affect me if Iím to sit down and do nothing so I decided to look for a business that I can do that would always keep me busy and at the same I would be happy doing it and that is how I delved into real estate business full time.

My preparation for retirement

You donít usually prepare for it because when you are playing, you have lots of distraction like family members, friends and friends of family. So you donít really say I want to plan for my retirement. You donít even know when you stop playing football because you see it as passion you donít ever want to give up. The distraction even makes you forget that one day you will have to retire. Footballers donít usually think that in some years they are going to stop playing.

The feeling is that they will play forever until something happens or maybe they have a problem with the club, the coach, injury or maybe change of club or maybe you are moving to a lower team or maybe a lower team is now looking for you and you are no longer getting big offers from big teams. That is when it dawns on you that it is time for you to retire. It is always like that.

But when I was playing in Europe, I knew that foreign players usually have plans for retirement and when they stop playing they already know what to do. Some would work for their club, their FA or on the endorsement they have and all that is so planned out. But back here, whatever you have at that point you have saved while playing is what you are going to rely on when you stop. It is always very difficult.

When I was playing, I knew nothing about business, but at the tail end of my career when I was about to retire, I think a year or two, I started doing a lot of investigation and asking question from people on what kind of business to go into that would be profitable and at the same time I will have time to be with my family and go on holiday with them, and all that. That helped me to go for real estate. It can run itself when you are not there.

Football is my life

I cannot say a particular thing because football has given me everything in life. There is no way I could have done anything without football. I think probably my life would have taken a different turn without football. So, everything I have achieved is through football. People have known me because of football. I have made money to take care of family because of football. Even the business that I do now is made possible because I made some money in football.

Why I opted out of coaching

As I said, a lot of people have different passion and that would also motivate them to go into certain things when they retire. Mine is business. I am temperamental, I may not be successful as a coach. Coaches do get into conflict with their players and managers of their club and as for me, I may not be able to stand some conflicts. That could affect me and the success of my team. That is why I decided that I donít have the heart for coaching. It is better to look at something else in retirement. So, I found business and things are going smoothly.

I still watch football matches a lot. Whenever I am watching Champions League or English Premier League I remember the good moments on the pitch and feel like going back but I also understand itís not possible to go back and play, but we just have to move on with life.

What I do now is quite different from the life of a footballer. Football life is very tedious and very tasking, in the sense that when you wake up in the morning the first thing you are thinking about is early morning training, it can be physical training, it can be ball work but you would go for training. By 7:00 you are already out.

When you finish your first training; probably if it is a Monday or a Tuesday, you know you are going to have two trainings that day, then after the morning training you go for your rest and come back again for your training in the evening. It is very tedious you donít have time for any other thing apart from football.

But life after football is quiet interesting. You will have the whole time for yourself and your family. When you are playing you tend to stay away from them. They donít see a lot of you. When I had my baby girl, my first child, I did not have time to stay with her. I was away throughout her formative years, so when I stopped playing I had time to be with her and pay for those lost time I didnít spend with her. It is very interesting now that Iím spending more time with my family. It is very important as well. So, I will say what I miss in football Iím gaining from being with my family.

My name open doors in business

Definitely! It would give you a kind of leeway, although it is not an automatic thing. Credibility is important too because that is what business is all about. When I meet people, the recognition is registered instantly. It is like Ďthis guy played footballí and people want to hear what you have to say. That is the opportunity you must take and people will give you but you can throw it away if are not honest and credible. That is what will make the relationship to last. But if you want to take advantage of that you will stain your reputation within a short time. They will tell themselves you are not honest and whatever client you have gained because of your name will stop doing business with you.

My advice to younger footballers

There is lot of advice, but the most important one would be for them to think beyond playing time. Have a plan with a reliable person, be it your wife or family member while playing and plan to step into whatever business you have started upon retirement. While I was away, my wife was running my business for me. Then, they must not be carried away while playing. They should invest whatever money they are making now for retirement and they have to be careful that it is a profitable venture they are investing on.
