5 misconceptions about Valentine's Day

Valentine's day: A special day.
Every year, Valentine's day has been tagged the day of love. On that day, red and white are the official colours and those that do not follow the colour code may feel bad about it.

However, people seem to have gotten the concept about valentine all wrong because lots of people see valentine day as an avenue for ‘get away adventure’, throwing caution in the wind and commiting sexual immorality. This is well noticed and common amongst so called married men and women.

There had been a lot of misconceptions about Valentine. To some, it is meant to be celebrated among couples. So most times youths try to get involved with their partners before that day so that they won't feel lonely. Some see it as a day of exchanging gifts and the gifts must be expensive. To some ladies, that is the day the man must propose. How sweet! To some, the day is all about the lady alone so the lady expects all the love and care for that day should be special and to some people the day is all about sex.

Some people believe sex is the ultimate show of love. This is not true because sex and love are two different things. Then there is the belief that sex on Valentine’s day is super awesome. Not necessarily true, because sex on this day is just the same as it is on other days. Research about Valentine's day has explained to me that it got its origin from Christianity but was later taken over and made popular by non- Christians.Contrary to the popular story around valentine’s day of how two lovers were burnt to death at stake for a particular crime or something.

The true version of the story says Saint Valentine was a priest of Rome who was imprisoned for succouring persecuted Christians. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell. Today, Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valentine’s Day, although on July 6 and July 30 across the world.

I'm sure some people would have already booked hotel suites and they want to bring heaven down on earth on that day. No, that concept of valentine is wrong. For these married couples, valentine day suppose to be an opportunity to rekindle that quenched flame of love, that has kept their marriage in the dark for months or even years. It is not meant to be a day of unfaithfulness. It is saddening that a day that was set aside for a beautiful thing as ‘LOVE’ has been converted to a day of horrific activities.

So let's delete this misconceptions from our hearts. Valentine is suppose to be done more in the House of God not in the nightclubs, joints, open bars etc. because God himself is love. So if valentine is about love then it about God! Valentine’s day should not be the reason for anyone to cheat on their partners or even defile your matrimonial bed.

It should be a day to remember to forgive those we feel had wronged us. Those that have caused us pain one way or the other, either through romantic relationship, office relationship and even church relationship etc. We should always try and eliminate sinister motives and intentions for Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s day is indeed a special day.
