Duke’s campaign DG resigns as SDP crisis deepens

The Director-General of the Donald Duke Campaign Organisation, Prof. Iorwuese Hagher has resigned, The PUNCH has learnt.

He confirmed this to our correspondent during an interview on Tuesday.

Hagher, whose posters are still visible across many districts of Abuja had contested against Duke, Prof. Jerry Gana, and two others at the Presidential primary of the Social Democratic Party in September.

However, following Duke’s victory, he was picked as the DG of the campaign Organisation.

Duke was subsequently sacked by a Federal High Court which affirmed Prof. Gana as the Presidential candidate of the SDP.

Speaking with our correspondent, Hagher said he decided to step down because he was relocating to the United States.

On whether he was supporting Duke or Gana, the professor said he could not choose between the two as he was also a Presidential candidate and once contested against the two men.

Hagher said the SDP crisis could only be solved from within. He, therefore, asked the warring factions to sheath their swords.

He said, “Donald Duke is a great man and he will make a great candidate. I stepped down for purely personal reasons. I am returning to the US as the President of the African Leadership Institute.

“I was on sabbatical.  I thought I would be able to combine the role with politics but I couldn’t.  The crisis within the SDP can be solved only by the SDP.”

Meanwhile,  it was learnt that the tussle between  Duke and Gana had broken the National Working Committee of the SDP in two.

A chieftain of the SDP said the party had assured Gana several months before Duke joined the party that the Presidency had been zoned to the North.

He said with the elections less than two months away, an emergency meeting may be held in the coming days and one of the two candidates will be pressured to step down.
