10 killed in renewed Kogi communal clash

On Wednesday, ten people were reportedly killed in renewed hostility between Ebira and Bassa-Komu ethnic groups in Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Scores of others were said to have sustained injuries, following the return of the displaced Ebira indigenes in a crisis which started last April.

Police spokesman William Aya, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the development yesterday in Lokoja, the state capital.

He assure the residents that the situation was under control.

But the command’s spokesman said only two persons died in the renewed clashes, which started months ago.

Aya said a team of mobile policemen, conventional policemen and soldiers were on the ground to forestall further clashes.

“Two people were killed: one yesterday (Wednesday) and the second today (yesterday). Calm has returned to the affected areas. The police commissioner in-charge of operation, mobile police, conventional police, area commanders and the Army are there to restore law and order as soon as possible,” he said.

It was gathered that following the intervention of elders in the area, the Ebira, who left their homes during the crisis, were asked to return by the state government, to pave way for lasting peace among the two ethnic groups.

To ensure lasting peace, the displaced Ebira, who were reportedly accompanied by security operatives and some political appointees, including the local government administrator, Sam Alumka and others, returned to Oguma, the headquarters of the local government area, on Wednesday.

They were said to have been kept there in anticipation that they would go to their villages and communities from Bassa.

It was alleged that uncomplimentary remarks by the paramount ruler of Bassa-Komu, the Aguma of Bassa, William Keke, sparked the latest crisis.

He reportedly said the returning Ebira people should go back to Lokoja or to where they had been staying.

A source said the Ohiogba of Mozum, Alhaji Halidu Bukar Ali and other Ebira leaders, who were at Aguma of Bassa’s palace to receive the returnees, were almost ambushed by hooligans/militia from one of the warring groups but for the timely intervention of security operatives.

It was also gathered that news of the escape from an ambush by the Ohiogba of Mozum and the Ebira leaders from Aguma palace and the “unguarded statement” spread to various communities, resulting in the latest escalation of hostilities.

Over 10 persons were said to have died in some of the communities.

It was also learnt that two residents of Mozum – Kagiwa Hussain and Aminu Usman – who were returning from Oguma, were allegedly killed by hoodlums in military uniform.

Hostility was said to have recurred at Ibiroko, Oguma, Sheria, Auta and Ojugbe communities at the time of filing this report last night.
