Federal Governament  to spend N784m on school feeding in Niger State

The Federal Government Home-grown School Feeding Programme is expected to spend about N784m every month to feed no fewer than 560,000 pupils in public primary schools in Niger State.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Amina Gwar, said the school feeding programme would create about 10,000 jobs and that about 5,000 would be cooks already engaged from the 274 wards across the 25 local government areas of the state.

According to Gwar, the state government also recruited monitors in all the wards to supervise the school feeding scheme in order to ensure that the vendors complied with the laid down policy and standard.

She said, “We have worked out how to make the Home-grown School Feeding Programme successful in Niger State. We are very transparent with what we are doing. No money comes to us; all monies go directly to the vendors and the aggregators.”

Gwar stated that the scheme had also been able to bring down the cost of raw materials by buying directly from dealers, a development she said had not had any negative effect on the market prices of the items.

She added that each senatorial zone of the state was patronised for agricultural products and that they had comparative advantages in terms of boosting the cultivation of produce in the zones.

According to her, the menu approved comprised the food the pupils ate at home.

She added, “On no condition will two or three pupils share one egg when they have it on their menu.”

On the support of the state government, Gwar said, “What the state government is investing is unimaginable. Apart from paying the monitors, the government is also responsible for the training of those engaged.”
