Gwoza is south-east of Maiduguri on the main road to Yola. The hills to the south and east of Gwoza along the Cameroon border are very scenic, and there is a fortified town south of Madagali called Sukor, about 25km south of Gwoza.

Ask in the area for directions. Sukor is very interesting, as, in addition to the fortifications, it is one of the few places where the people smelt their own iron to make tools, as filmed by the Basil Davidson ‘Africa’ team.

It is about 11/2 hours walk up a remarkable stone-built ‘pathway’. From Gwoza, there is a shorter walk/climb into the hills from the valley behind the town, which goes to the village of Guduf, where there are interesting ‘bone’ huts. Park by the primary school in the valley.
