Mandara Mountains tourist site in Maiduguri

Maiduguri is the capital of Borno State in the far north-east of the country and served by an airport. It is at the end of the railway line from Port Harcourt and has 5 main roads leading from it. It is also a base for visit to northern Cameroon, but remember to get your visas in lagos or Calabar, as there is no Consular Office for the Cameroons in Maidugri. It is a pleasant city with wide roads, tree-lined avenues and interesting roundabouts.

The main tourist attraction is the Kyarimi Park
which has one of the best zoos in Nigeria and is a pleasant, shady place to visit. The animals include a small herd of eland, several elephants, a hippopotamus and a large number of crocodiles. The zoo is frequented by many wild birds, attracted by the food for the animals. This is an added bonus. About 200 m from the entrance to the zoo, there is a row of handicraft stalls selling leather goods and other local crafts.

 MANDARA MOUNTAINS

Mandara-Mountains-Adamawa

The Mandara Mountains are a volcanic range extending about 125 miles (200km) in northern Cameroon, along the border with Nigeria. Hiking in the remarkably beautiful landscapes of the Mandara Mountains is one of the most popular activities for tourists exploring Cameroon. The spectacular rock formations and lush valleys and hills are interspersed with traditional villages with round huts, where visitors can experience authentic local culture. The Mofu ethnic group dominates the region and the hillside villages subsist mainly through terrace farming, with sorghum the principal crop.

One of the most famous of these villages is Rhumsiki, which is stunningly situated in rugged mountain scenery. Other notable villages worth a visit include Djingliya, Tourou, Koza, Maga and Mora. Foreigners are likely to be welcomed warmly in all these villages and the best way to explore the lovely region is by trekking from village to village.

Unfortunately, the British Foreign Office, and a number of other travel authorities, warn against travel to the far north of Cameroon and particularly along the northern section of the Nigerian border. The Mandara Mountains are not considered safe for tourists because of the ongoing conflict just across the border in Nigeria, which may spill over into the otherwise peaceful mountains. Those adventurers who choose to ignore this advice and enjoy hiking in the region should take every possible safety precaution.

Borno State Museum. The museum was commissioned in 1984. It is quite small, but laid out and interesting. It has display of arms, amour, pottery, baskets, mats, jewellery and household items. It is very much a museum for those interested in the local culture and people. The museum is close to the customs roundabout, Maiduguri, near the junction of Sir Kashim Ibrahim Road, Gambaru Road and Bama Road, and signed. There are several places of interest to visit nearby, including Dikwa, (see page 98) and the Sambisa Game Reserve (see page 111). Many of the local people are Kanuris, who are unique in their mode of dressing, hairstyles and tradition a further example of the fascinating diversity of cultures in Nigeria.
