  • How to Win Business War
What does business have to do with war? Why do so many CEO's read Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" and "Atlas Shrugged"? Because business is all about strategy, understanding the game, winning.

Five areas are important in any war:

    1. Intelligence:
Know what's going on in your business, in your competitors' businesses, the socio-political environment, learn about spying, counterintelligence, politics as they affect your business on a minor and macro scale, and measure everything. You can't manage what you can't measure. Read Michael Gerber's "The E-Myth" and apply it. This is all about strategy.

Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat." ~ Sun Tzu: The Art of War
    2. Defence:
Reactive. You are constantly under attack by acts of God, politicians and their bureaucrats, your competition, employees and managers, vendors, competition, customers, and sometimes, even family members. We have to defend the castle. Visit a castle sometime (See picture - me at Arundel Castle in Southern England) and take the tour. Learn how they were defended and grab ideas and analogies for your business. Handle change.

"We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender." ~ Winston Churchill
"I am sometimes a fox and sometimes a lion. The whole secret of government lies in knowing when to be the one or the other." ~ Napoleon Bonaparte

    3. Attack:
This is proactively increasing your sales and profits, reducing costs and threats, employing and training, marketing, selling, branding, expanding, learning, moving forward, advertising, using leverage, collaborative marketing and joint ventures, reciprocating, building alliances and referral systems, creating additional income streams, piggybacking on existing resources and flows, putting your strategies and intelligence gathered to work.

"The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his." ~ George S. Patton

    4. Consistency:
Without consistency, nothing works or lasts. Discipline is essential to the business warrior. Self control and maturity separates the boys from the men. Consistency means never losing focus and remember why you're in business and what your real objectives are, even in the midst of battle, and especially during prolonged hard times. Read Churchill's writings. Be inspired by Patton. Don't sacrifice your values and reputation for intermediate, short-term relief. Read about wartime concentration camp inmates, escapes, victories and losses.

"Death is nothing, but to live defeated and inglorious is to die daily." ~ Napoleon Bonaparte

    5. Diversification:
Flexibility, fluid thinking and an open mind allow one to consider alternative actions, to diversify, end and begin new services, product lines and suppliers, cut parasites out of your life, and ask and answer the hard questions. Business takes courage, belief, faith, and self-esteem. Spread your income and your risks. Embrace change and new opportunities.
