South East governors want Enugu airport, federal roads fixed

Governors of the South-East states, at a meeting in Enugu on Sunday evening, called on the Federal Government to take advantage of the dry season to rehabilitate dilapidated infrastructure in the geopolitical zone.

The governors specifically demanded urgent action on the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, and federal roads in the South-East.

“Further to our meeting with Mr. President earlier in the month on the deplorable state of infrastructure in the South-East, especially federal roads, such as the Enugu-Port Harcourt, Ninth Mile-Onitsha Road, Aba-Ikot Ekpene Road, Okigwe-Owerri Road and Ninth Mile-Makurdi Express Road, the meeting called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps in the repairing of the roads, especially in this dry season.

“Equally of importance is the deplorable state of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, especially the runway, terminal building and cargo section.

“We request that urgent steps be taken to address the problems at the airport,” the Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, who is also the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, said while reading a communique issued after the meeting.

The governors also asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that the November 18, 2017 governorship election in Anambra State holds as scheduled.

According to Umahi, reports available to the governors indicate that the people of Anambra State are willing to participate in the election.

Umahi further disclosed that the meeting approved a South-East Economic Summit, with the support and partnership of the DFID, from November 11 to 13, 2017.

He also said the meeting approved the visit of Brenthurst Foundation, South Africa to the South-East on an economic mission, from November 6 to 11, 2017.

Other governors at the meeting, which held at the Enugu State Government House, were Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, (Enugu), and Okezie Ikpeazu, (Abia).

Nkem Okeke, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, represented Governor Willie Obiano, while the Imo State Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere, represented Governor Rochas Okorocha.

The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nnia Nwodo, were also at the meeting.
