QUICK FACTS

Hello,

Here is another edition of QUICK FACTS. Our focus today is on Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day originates from the pagan fertility celebration known as the Lupercalia

Lupercalia (known as the “festival of sexual license”) was held by ancient Romans in honour of Lupercus, god of fertility and husbandry

February was sacred to Juno Februata, the Roman goddess of febris (“fever”) of love, and of women and marriage

On February 14, a lottery is held where teenage girls would be randomly picked by boys and the duo become sexual partners for the rest of the year joining erotic games and feasts celebrated throughout Rome

After Christianity became an official state religion, many pagan Roman customs were adopted

In a Christianised version of it, the names of “saints” were drawn by both boys and girls who would be mandated to emulate the life of the saint whose name they'd drawn

In 494 AD, Pope Gelasius renamed the festival of Juno Februata as the “Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary” and in 496, named February 14 in honor of St Valentine as the patron saint of lovers

The celebration of Valentine's Day today is somewhat like its Lupercalian origin within the Western-oriented world

Several biographies of different men named Valentine were merged into one “official” St Valentine

The most popular St Valentine was a Roman Priest who secretly got young couples married during the reign of Claudius II when such marriage was prohibited

Claudius who had ruled that Romans stuck to polytheism made it a crime punishable by death to associate with Christians to which Valentine disobeyed

Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and his sentence to death was carried out on February 14, 270 AD near a gate that was later named Porta Valentini in his memory.

An almond tree was planted near his grave. Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of abiding love and friendship.

Over the centuries, St. Valentine’s Day cards became popular. These cards were painted with pictures of Cupid and hearts, and meticulously decorated with lace, silk or flowers

On each February 14 for Valentine's Day, messages of affection, love, and devotion are exchanged around the world.

I hope you found this educative. Join us next week, God willing, for a fresh edition of QUICK FACTS.

Let's keep learning!

Good morning!

Regards,

Abdussalam Amoo
