Religion thoughts

The prelate of the methodist church of Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde, made some interesting revealations in his interview in the sunday Vanguard of today. While i agree with him on the multi-faceted,mostly man-made, problems the country is faced with,i will beg to disagree on the modus operandi! One of the areas i disagree with is this constant use of the word ,THEM,and THEY, when trying to point to the ever evasive enemies of mr. president! Through-out the interview he kept exenorating Dr. Goodluck Jonathan from the ever-increasing security situation in the country! He kept saying mr. president is a "good man" but "they" are not allowing him to do his job! Good gracious!! I am yet to see any president in the world that his country's constitution empowered so much like the Nigeria's president! Yet somebody is telling us that some people are preventing the president from carrying out his constitutional duties! The same "they" and "them" supported him when he moved against Vincent obulafor, Atiku Abubarkar, Timi Sylvia, and james Ibori! But now that it has gotten to saving the nation from the anarhists, he is now powerless? Maybe Dr. Makinde knows more than he is revealing to us, i don't know. But he should please spear us all that accolade for the president and advice him to please take the nation's security with the seriousness that it deserves! The Nigerian state is like a ship that is fast running aground if nothing concrete and positive is done NOW! Good enough, Dr. makinde mentioned the imminent revolution that is in the air( that is if it has not started!),should not be allowed to mature, for the consequences will be far greater than what any of us can guess! I hope those in power will be wise and listen to the voice of reason!!!

You know, life teaches us so many things! Sometimes, the things you learn from experience may be different from the generally acceptable norms, even when these norms can not be emperically verified! Having been in Nigeria now for more than twenty years, after some five years abroad, i have come to understand that GOD works in ways that we humans do not clearly understand! Take the case of the sate of Nigeria for example,no matter what we have done in terms of prayer, the country's fortune does not appear to be changing for the better! Instead it is gradually, but surely getting worse every year! This brings me to the issue of prayer! No matter how long you pray, and you dont have the wherewithal to follow it up,it may just be a pipedream! We Nigerians like to make people believe that we are a prayerful nation, even pastors of different coloration are seen in the corridors of power pretending to be helping the powers-that-be seek the face of GOD in their attempt to rule well, but at the end of the day what do we get? Monumental corruption in high places! This brings me to the old saying that" GOD helps those who help themselves"! Until we imbibe this adage, we will be moving in circles with no good end in site!!

"Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe"! For the xtians in our mist,do you remember this sentence in John 20;19-21? For those that have forgotten, and those non-xtians,it came about when thomas was doubting the resurection of JESUS CHRIST and he had to see the scars on JESUS hands before he believed! There is a great lesson here. For JESUS, HE was miffed that thomas did not belive without asking questions. But i am sure if he were a Nigerian, HE will not blame thomas! Here you need to see to believe because of 419!!

atience, endurance, sacrifice, and undiluted love are the virtures GOD bestowed on us as epitomized by his death and resurrection!. Are we humans ready to spread these virtures between ourselves, and between nations of the world?

The bruhaha over the so-called church donation to Mr. president in his hometown in Bayelsa state is generating more heat than it should, considering how trivial it is! We Nigerians seem to have short memories, otherwise we should have remembered that our former president, General Olusegun Obasanjo, also recieved far bigger "donations" while in office, and heavens did not fall! Honestly, i have said it before, and i will say it again--we do not have patriotic Nigerians, because NOBODY believes in NIGERIA! We only mouth the word when one tribe has the advantage over other tribes, and want to punish any challenger to their authority! We all know that the Nigerian constitution does not allow any politician to accept gratifications while in office, but we keep a blind eye when it is committed by somebody from our tribe. The other time a tribe rose against the national assembly for daring to "disgrace their son out of office"! Ofcourse, the national assembly had to back down, and the said president completed two-terms, even had the audacity to try a third! A country where different rules are made for different people can not survive for long. We need to look at the country again to see how every component part can have a sense of belonging. Else we will be building a country on sandy foundation!!

Chelsea's victory last night and fairy-tale march in the EUFA Champion's League reminds me of Zambia's in the recently- concluded African Nations' cup! They are not fantastic this year, but they look like the sure-bet for the champions' league glory! It is just a feeling i have. Let's see if it shall come to pass!!

Watchers of international politics will be wondering why the Syrian debacle is taking this destructive rout, and why it is taking the international community this long to have an acceptable consensus as per how to handle this delicate issue. The truth is the international community has messed themselves up in the way they handled the Libyan crisis, so no leader of any nation under the threat of rebels will succumb to ploy used by the international community to dethrone and decimate the regime of Muammer Ghaddafi of Libyia! They are now wiser! So any armed threat to any regime WILL be met with the full military might of that regime! For they know what failure, allowing internationl community to intervene will mean to them and their childern! This is why the Syrian crisis may be one of the bloodiest in history, especially if the USA and her Arab allies venture to intervene militarily! This is also why i support the positions of the Chinese and Russians! There should be a negotiated settlement to the crisis to avoid escalating the crisis beyound Syria.

"Dont force it, dont push it,let it happen naturally, it will surely happen if it is meant to be....". I dont how many of you remember that old-school music? The principle of that music still applies in real life! Sometimes, you try so hard to get,or keep something, but instead of getting it ,you lose it! It may not be because you did not try,but just because it is not meant to be! We try ll the time to find a workable formula for our country to move forward, but the harder we try, the more the country is going deeper into anarchy and sliding towards a failed state! In some relationships, the more you sacrifice to make things work, the more the relationship keeps heading to the exit door! Sometimes it may just be wise to allow providence take control, once you have done your best!!
