Why I Support Omoyele Sowore For President in 2019
by Iso Bassey

47 year old Omoyele Sowore has declared his intention to run for President of Nigeria. I do not know Sowore personally but I have sort of followed him for over a decade. Sometime in the early 2000s some daring articles begun to emerge on the web, exposing government corruption and malfeasance. They were co-authored by Jonathan Elendu and Omoyele Sowore and published on Elendu Reports. I believe Sowore and Elendu parted company at some point, after which Sowore founded
www.saharareporters.com .
There is hardly any Nigerian with access to the Web who does not know www.saharareporters.com . One intriguing thing about Sahara Reporters is that people either love it or hate it.
There are rarely in-betweens. I happen to be one of the many Nigerians who appreciate the role that Sahara Reporters has played in exposing the massive theft of public resources by government officials in Nigeria. Being a fan of Sahara Reporters, when Sowore declared his intention to run for the President, I naturally took an interest in his candidacy.

I first begun to take his candidacy seriously after I watched a video showing his heated verbal exchange with the Minister for Communications, Adebayo Shittu on Fresh FM , Ibadan. During the debate, Sowore told the Minister in very clear terms that young people in Nigeria would rise up and kick his government out of power in 2019. He summarized his message to the minister with these words “I can assure you that you will not be laughing by this time next year, Sir”. Since this encounter, I have followed Sowore daily via his #TakeItBack Facebook stream from one town hall meeting to another across the different states of Nigeria and cities of the world. Here are 4 reasons why I support his candidacy and will actively work for his election:

1. He represents a fresh face in politics
Nigerian politics in the last two decades has been dominated by the same players. These people have simply shuttled from one party to another based on personal expediency. For the most part, they share a common unprogressive and selfish philosophy of leadership and governance. As the saying goes, “you cannot teach an old dog new tricks”. I would favour a government of fresh faces who have had little or no affiliation to any of the old or existing political structures that have delivered failed leadership to Nigeria.
Sowore, having never belonged to any of these old structures is in my opinion a breath of fresh air for Nigerian politics.

2. He has demonstrated capacity to build a successful organisation
Successful organisations are not easy to build. Those who have built them know that it takes a multitude of skills to make an organization successful. These include Idea generation, team building/management, financial management, selling and customer relations amongst others. A potpourri of these skills mixed with patience and consistency is what it takes to build a successful organisation.
Sahara Reporters is a successful organization and remains a strong brand across Africa. In building it into what it is today, in my opinion, Sowore  has demonstrated a wide range of skills which show capacity to lead. I have little doubt that he would do a better job than the incumbent.

3. He is courageous
To reform Nigeria and address its most desperate challenges will take a great deal of courage for any leader. The truth is that Nigeria works only for a tiny minority of people who either have political power or are close to those who have it. These people don’t let go easily especially when their means of livelihoods appear to be threatened. They fight back and they fight dirty. If Nigeria is to work for majority of Nigerians, power must be wrestled away from these cabals (as we call them in Nigeria). It will take nothing short of courage to make this happen.
Sowore has spent over two decades of his life fighting injustices and exposing corruption at great personal risk.
As an ordinary citizen without special protection, he has stepped on the toes of the mighty and powerful and still continues to do so today. Few in Nigeria have demonstrated that level of courage and I find it very admirable.

4. He is talking to and listening to Nigerians
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its main precursor the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) have been the dominant political parties in Nigeria in the last few years. Through the use of money and privileges, these parties have railroaded their way to electoral victories time and time again. Being able to do this quite easily has given them a sense of arrogance that has detached them from the ordinary Nigerian.

Their underlying philosophy? “talking to and listening to Nigerians is not particularly important as long as you have the right godfathers who will guarantee political structures.”
There are many people who have expressed an interest in running for the position of President in 2019. Most in my opinion would do a better job than the incumbent but Sowore is the only candidate that is daily touring cities across the country and the world holding town hall meetings and engaging closely with Nigerians.

The word “Change” has become an anathema to Nigerians after the misadventure of 2015. However the truth still stands that Nigeria desperately needs new and fresh leadership. Sowore may not be the best educated, the most qualified or the most experienced Nigerian, but amongst the candidates that have thrown their hats in the race, he is the one I feel is best placed to deliver the reforms Nigeria desperately needs. I will not only vote for him, I will actively canvass support for his presidency.
2015 showed that it is possible to unseat an incumbent.

If it happened in 2015, it can happen in 2019. In my earlier article Bad politicians are elected by good people who do not vote, I stated that “Based on the results of the 2015 general elections, it is clear that politicians (either good or bad) are elected by an average of 29% of eligible voters. In some states, it is as low as 17%. This means that across Nigeria, out of 97 million eligible voters, only about 28 million actually vote. ”
Based on this statistic, it is not difficult to see a route to the Presidency for Sowore should he pick up a party ticket. A party ticket will avail him of structures and guarantee some votes.
However, victory for him will come from the votes of millions of disgruntled Nigerians, many of whom he is meeting with daily at town hall meetings.
