Saraki meets US envoy behind closed doors

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday met with the United States’ Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stuart Symington.

The meeting was held behind closed doors at the Senate President’s office, according to Saraki’s Special Assistant on International Relations, Mr Bamikole Omisore, who made the announcement via his Twitter account.

“The US Ambassador, Stuart Symington, paid a courtesy visit to President of Senate @bukolasaraki early this morning in his office. Both had a private discussion before SP proceeded into the red chamber,” the tweet read.

The meeting was held few hours before the Senate and the House of Representatives held an emergency joint closed-door session, where they resolved, among other resolutions, that the international community should be involved in the political developments in the country.

The resolution read, “The National Assembly should liaise with international communities through the IPU,  APU,  ECOWAS,  CPA,  Parliament,  Pan African Parliament, EU,  UN,  US Congress and UK Parliament to secure our democracy.”

Meanwhile, a source in the Senate confirmed that some of the Department of State Services’ officials withdrawn from Saraki had been redeployed back to him.

The DSS was said to have on Sunday withdrawn most operatives of the secret service attached to the Senate President. “It is true. They were reduced tremendously,”

Confirming the return of the security operatives on Tuesday, the source said, “Yes, they brought back four of them out of nine.”

The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), had on Monday met with the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN); the Director General of the DSS, Mr Lawal Daura; and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris.

The meeting was held hours after the DSS operatives were withdrawn and after the Nigeria Police asked the Senate President to come forward and explain his alleged link with the armed robbery suspects arrested over the attack on banks in Offa, Kwara State, which left 33 persons dead.

Saraki had, however, announced on Monday that he was no longer to be invited by the police but had been asked to present his written defence on the allegations made by the suspects against him Wednesday.

Saraki had taken to his social media accounts to publish updates on the development.

The posts read, “I have just informed my ADC to get the letter of invitation from @PoliceNG in respect of the allegations raised yesterday  (Sunday)— so that I can immediately honour the alleged invitation.

Following my earlier tweet, I have received the letter from @PoliceNG. They are no longer asking me to appear at any station, but to respond in writing to the allegations within 48 hours, which I plan to do.”

In another development, President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Justice Abdul Adamu Karafati as the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.

Saraki read Buhari’s letter in which the President sought legislative confirmation of the appointment.
