Nigerians  react to recognition of June 12 by President Buhari

Controversies have continued to dodge President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day, as opposed to the May 29 it used to be.

The President’s social media followers said that though the recognition of the date was a good idea, they expressed suspicion that it was meant to garner votes from a section of the country, and that it negated the spirit behind it.

But while some criticise the move, others commend Buhari, saying it is altogether a welcome development.

The respondents took to Buhari’s verified Twitter handle, @MBuhari, to voice their divergent opinion.

See the various responses:

Which is your handing over date next year, May 29th or June 12th?

— Kingsley Oyero 1 (@koyero) June 6, 2018

It will have no effect on the minds of those citizens who have decided that their well-being has been of the lowest priority to this administration. So if it is indeed politically motivated and swaying minds is the objective, it is an exercise in futility!

— Anengiyefa (@anengiyefa) June 6, 2018

Perfect stunt to woo yoruba’s….Don’t fall for this!!!public holiday won’t bring food or stop the killings or even change the fact that some people are mad at themselves for campaigning and voting for you

— RN.®™ (@Duks_OG) June 6, 2018

We will never fall for this. Once bitten twice shy…

— AYANLOLA ABDULJELIL (@owolabitaiwo) June 6, 2018

You do know his buying the West with this abi?

— She Rules (@SheRules4) June 6, 2018

Not when it is politically motivated itself.

— Anengiyefa (@anengiyefa) June 6, 2018

Desperation of the highest order. Nothing stops Nigerians from voting you out in 2019. You want to deceive the Yorubas again. Anu mpama

— Billionaire (@Gomeznsude) June 6, 2018

Let me understand this….

Abacha was a part of the IBB govt that refused to uphold MKO’s victory. Then Abacha dethroned Sonekan to become military ruler…you @mbuhari @ngrpresident served Abacha with all pleasure. While you served him MKO’s wife was killed. Seriously?

The trap is to get your vote in 2019.

Please, don’t be cautious and careful and don’t make mistakes again.

— DONKATCHY (@MoreGrace11) June 6, 2018

Its.a good one……BUHARI …. but it won’t make me vote for u….. cos the.intent isnt real

— Dan Esi (@esi_dan) June 6, 2018

Awwwww… quite thoughtful of you

Ngwa start packing your bags tho, you won’t be there to celebrate it as president next year insha Allah

— Okeke Emmanuel (@drmaazi) June 6, 2018

— Kaycee (@charlezkcee) June 6, 2018

This move is highly commendable. Better late than never. MKO was a man who died on what he believed. Few men do that. But I hope that the family of MKO will benefit maximally from this move?

Mr president you are trying to be right but you are wrong… We are tired with this double minded game… After all my pvc is saying no second chance.

— dioham38 (@dioham38) June 6, 2018

To buy the heart of the south-west, this is deception, he doesn’t love us. He was working under General abacha when MKO was jailed, who have ear let him hear

— Abiola Terry (@terry_abiola) June 6, 2018

For some, the state of the economy is more important:

Sir how has that affected living condition, just purchase kerosene at #270 per litre for somebody at petrol station ,I was told I was lucky. It is actually #300 per litre. That sh be more important to FEC meeting today sir

— seyi ajayi (@evidencebyme) June 6, 2018

When are u going to reduce the price of fuel? You are the minister of petroleum

— Ayo esq (@hayobam) June 6, 2018

But while others fault the move, many others see it as praise- and votes-worthy:

At last. What a former lousy leader could not do to even his kinsman as a mark of honor. Congrats Abiola Family, congrats Kingibe family and congrats Fawehinmi family. Thanks to the stateman and leader of modern Nigeria, PMB.

— Dr Adebayo Aina (@BayoKofo) June 6, 2018

The best part of this #June12 Democracy Day ish is that IBB, the Eku Ẹdá, who got us into this Deep Sh*t is still ALIVE. Smtms, God keeps people to watch their own shredding in 3D. The timing and @MBuhari‘s body lang may be wrong, but this is a RIGHT STEP in the RIGHT DIRECTION.

— #GotYourPVC? (@justemdee) June 6, 2018

God bless you PMB!!!

— segilola (@segilolaa) June 6, 2018

What Obasanjo couldn’t do Buhari is doing it..

The Yoruba people are proud of Mr president…. Shame on I.B.B who annulled the most freest, fairest and credible election in our history, shame on obj for not declaring June 12 as democracy day all the years he served.

— Abdallah Yakubu Musa (@abdallah_yakub) June 6, 2018

Infrastructure is being developed across d country, your response is “it is politics”. A long awaited recognition of MKO Abiola & JUNE 12 struggle, as usual, your default response is “it is politics”. This is for y’all 👉🏽 Be bitter, but PLEASE don’t loose sanity – @Veronbren03

Only mischievous people would think this move by President Muhammadu Buhari is a gimmick to win S/West support for his re-election. Whether Buhari wins in 2019 or not, he has done what the self-centred Obasanjo, who craved for 3rd term, could not do. All hail Pres. Buhari 🙌🙌🙌

— AJE (@Riddwane) June 6, 2018

Even without the gesture – which is without any doubt the rift thing to do – PDP never had d chance of winning SW.

— Shola O’Neil (@OneilSH) June 6, 2018

I don’t know what people always read political meaning to anything Fed Govt does. Buhari may have disappointed many, he sure deserves accolades for this decision to recognize Abiola

— AJE (@Riddwane) June 6, 2018

May God almighty bless and honour our president. Me and my entire family we are grateful and saying sai Buhari till 2023. ‘In sha Allah’ come 2019 singing KWAM I “BUHARI lo ma se…

We are grateful to Buhari over Abiola’s recognition – Ogun govt

The government of Ogun State has expressed its profound gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for conferring the highest posthumous award of the land, Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic on an illustrious son of the state, late Chief M. K. O. Abiola.

This was contained in a statement signed on Wednesday night by the Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa.

It stated further that President Buhari has shown that he is a man who believes in justice.

The statement reads in part, “We are grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari for this recognition of an illustrious son of Ogun State and an icon of our democratic struggle, Chief M. K. O Abiola.

“President Buhari has shown with this action that he is a man that believes in justice and giving to every person his or her dues.

“Although this posthumous award may appear to some people to have come late, we thank the President. We urge all lovers of democracy and goodwill to continue to support the ideals for which Chief M. K. O. Abiola lived and died for.

“For us in Ogun State, we shall not forget Bashorun M. K. O. Abiola.”

Ambode hails Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as new Democracy Day

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Wednesday hailed the announcement by President Muhammadu Buhari, declaring June 12 as the New Democracy Day, in honour of the late presumed winner of the June 12 1993 Presidential Election, Chief MKO Abiola.

Ambode, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Habib Aruna, said the development was a historic and symbolic moment in the nation’s political trajectory.

The statement read, “This is a welcome development. It is a historic moment in our nation, and I join other Nigerians to commend President Buhari on this announcement.

“By this move, he has done what previous administrations failed to do.

“This not only shows that the president is a man of history and character but also eloquently confirms that the heroes of democracy did not die in vain after all.”

The Federal Government had on Wednesday declared that June 12 will henceforth be celebrated as Democracy Day.
