Today,  I give my respect to senator shehu sani,  the senator representing Kaduna central at the red chamber for being the first senator that is bold enough to tell us the amount each senator takes home monthly.

According to  sani,  each senator takes home a salary of #750,000 and a running cost of  #13.5m. He further said that they are at liberty to spend the running cost the way they want only that you must provide receipt for the spending.

Also,  a senator is entitled to a whopping sum of #700m as consituency allowance. The money according to him is warehouses with an agency of govt who will carry out the constituency  projects on behalf of the senators. Sani was truthful enough to admit that most of  them don't carry out any consituenty project but pocketed the money. With this revelation, it is obvious that truly Nigeria is not a poor country but a country where the political elite takes advantage of the cluelessness of the citizens to enrich themselves.

By our laws, the legislatures are to check the execesses of the executive and judiciary but who checks the legislature?  These thieves are quick to raise alarm about the spending of others but no one knows what is earmark as a monthly running cost to the office of Senate President, deputy Senate President, Senate leader and other principal officers.

How can a senator who sits three times in a week mostly without any meaningful contribution earn this much and a Professor ,an Accountant, a doctor, architect, teacher whose contribution to the society is outstanding earns their salaries in thousands or hundreds. Nigerians need to put pressure on these thieving senators to amend the constitution in a way that their work will be on part time basis or borrow from our colonial master who operated a bicamera legislature.
