Cracks in nPDP as ultimatum expires

A faction of  New Peoples Democratic Party has disowned a letter written by a former National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Kawu Baraje and an ex-Secretary of the party, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

Members of the new PDP joined the All Progressives Congress before the 2015 elections.

The Chairman of  the nPDP faction, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and the Secretary, Abdulmunin Jibrin, in a letter addressed to the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, in Abuja, on Monday, described  Oyinlola and Baraje’s letter as an “embarrassment.”

Adamu and Jibrin said they received with “great shock” and embarrassment the news that Baraje led four others to deliver a letter to Odigie-Oyegun, claiming they did so on behalf of members of the nPDP.

Adamu said in the letter that Baraje alleged that members of the nPDP were being marginalised and maltreated in the APC.

He recalled that the last meeting of the nPDP was held in 2014.  Adamu stated, “Since then, no meeting has been called. Where did Alhaji Baraje and Col. Olagunsoye Oyinlola (retd.) obtain the alleged resolution to write the said letter? When and where was the meeting held? Who are those that attended the meeting?”

Adamu described Baraje and Oyinlola’s ultimatum given to the APC to address their grievances as a dangerous joke taken too far.

The former Nasarawa State governor dismissed Oyinlola’s letter as full of contradictions, false assertions and misrepresentations.

He said, “We, as initiators and founding members of the defunct nPDP, therefore, wish to condemn and disassociate ourselves from the letter and apologise for the obvious embarrassment the letter has caused to our party and the government.

“We wish to reaffirm our support and confidence in the party and Mr President and we do not in any way feel marginalised or maltreated as we are clearly in the league of the biggest beneficiaries of the party.”

Adamu explained that contrary to claims made by Baraje in the said letter, the APC had not only been fair but also generous to members of the nPDP.

He stated, “Government at the federal level is not only the executive branch in isolation. It includes the legislature as well. The APC government, deliberately or not, has a balance of power among the various parties and groups that merged to form the APC at the federal level.

“While the Muhammadu Buhari-led Congress for Progressive Change got the Presidency, the Asiwaju Bola Tinubu-led Action Congress of Nigeria got the Vice-Presidency.

“We the nPDP, as we were then called, eventually got the combination of Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, though under somewhat questionable circumstances.

“All of these offices control an enormous amount of patronage and instruments of reward.

“It is strange that we did not see any qualms when the Senate President and Speaker dispensed about 200 appointments including committee chairmen without asking for nominations from Mr. President, the Vice- President, the APC as a party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as party leader, Bisi Akande, the pioneer national chairman and a host of others. Is that not marginalisation?

“If we the nPDP did not view that as marginalisation then we do not have the moral justification to accuse the President if he appoints his ministers without seeking our nominees.”

He argued that all the key stakeholders of the nPDP were accommodated as principal officers in the Senate and House of Representatives as well as chairmen of grade “A” committees in the National Assembly.

“We cannot hold any of the above-mentioned positions whether elected and appointed or a combination of both and yet complain of marginalisation,” Adamu argued.

He further argued that nPDP was also accommodated within the APC party hierarchy.

Attempts to get a reaction from Alhaji Kawu Baraje were futile. Calls to his mobile telephone number were neither picked nor returned.  A response to a text message sent to him on the subject was still being expected as of the time of filing this report.
