 Atiku Declares for PDP presidency

As Secondus says political tsunami’ll soon sweep APC away

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar (middle); PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus (right) and others, during Abubakar’s declaration to run for the presidency 2019, in Adamawa, on Saturday.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar,on Saturday, painted a grim picture about security in Nigeria, claiming that more people had been killed under the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government than persons slain in strife-torn countries of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Speaking at the formal declaration of his presidential bid, the fourth since 2003, at his country home in Adamawa State, he said Nigeria was experiencing its most insecure atmosphere in history.

Specifically, he gave thumbs down for the administration for failing in such areas of government’s primary duties and functions in the areas of security of lives and property, as well as national unity and economy, lamenting the country had never had never is so bad.

“Fellow Nigerians, the government of APC has failed; it has failed to unite Nigerians,” Atiku stated, stressing that “today, we are more divided than in any other time in the history of this country.”

The declaration, which was held at the Ribadu Square in Yola, attracted leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from all the geopolitical zones of the country and the National Working Committee of the PDP represented by its national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.

Insisting that the administration inherited an economy that was making a steady growth in 2015, Atiku lamented that the APC administration had taken the economy to a backward slide with the attendant dire consequences.

The former vice-president is among some leading lights in the PDP seeking its ticket for next year’s presidential election.

“The APC government has destroyed our economy. They took over an economy with a growth of 7 per cent and brought it down to less than 2 per cent. Today, we are witnessing the most insecure situation in Nigeria ever since APC took over,” Atiku decried.

While noting that more people had died in Nigeria under the APC than in Iran and Afghanistan, he said the country’s economy had also continued to flounder.

He added: “Today, we have the highest unemployment rate in this country. More than 10 million of our people have been made unemployed under the watch of the APC administration.”

He, however, said that he is poised to work with other compatriots in the PDP to secure the party’s nomination for the next year’s election and rebuild the economy and reunite the country.

“What the PDP is going to do is to restore our economy, restore the hope of a greater Nigeria and ensure that we have security of lives and property. I, therefore, appeal to all of you wherever you may be that it is time to now re-embrace the party that has given us unity, prosperity and security in this country,” Atiku declared.

The chairman of the PDP in Adamawa State, Mr Tahir Shehu, welcomed new defectors into the party.

Speaking at the event, the National Chairman of the PDP warned APC against a political tsunami that “will sweep it away from government in 2019.”

He said with the activities lined up for the next couple of weeks, there would no longer be APC.

Secondus, who declared that APC had totally collapsed, said the mammoth crowd at the rally was a confirmation of the acceptance that the PDP enjoyed.

“This is a large crowd, and as you can see, the PDP is now the party of choice.  I know that as we proceed in the coming weeks there will be a political tsunami and there will be no APC anymore.

“You are aware that APC has failed completely to provide the security for our people.  People are being killed across the states.  They killed them in Zamfara, Sokoto, Taraba, Adamawa, Borno, Benue, Plateau State.  All over the country, there has been blood and blood is flowing.  Is this the kind of government you want?  No.

“They are corrupt; the leaders of APC are in the valley of corruption.  The government has collapsed; the economy has collapsed.  We are on a rescue mission.  We are coming like train.  APC will be crushed in the name of our Lord, Almighty God.”

Alleged attack on Fayose: Secondus leads PDP protest to National AssemblySecondus pledged that with PDP government in place, all youths would be employed.

He called on everyone to join PDP, since, according to him, APC had collapsed.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce also spoke at the occasion, campaigning for Atiku.

He stressed that Nigeria needed a leader like Atiku to rescue the nation from the pains of poor economy, insecurity and unemployment.

He said Atiku was the leader who could bring about the real change that the country needed.
