Acting President Osinbajo sacks DSS boss, Lawal Daura

In what appears to be a twist to the siege on the National Assembly by security operatives on Tuesday, the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, has sacked the Director-General of the Department of State Service, Lawal Daura.

The DSS and the Police had locked down the National Assembly on Tuesday, even as the Senate leadership had scheduled a meeting to hold in the chambers in the afternoon.

Lawmakers who came with the hope of attending the meeting were denied entry into the Assembly by the security operatives.

Lawmakers elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress had dissociated themselves from the security operatives’ actions, even as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party had accused the Executive and APC lawmakers of an attempt to truncate democracy.

Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, disclosed Daura’s sacking on his Twitter handle, @akandeoj.

He wrote, “AgP Yemi Osinbajo has directed the termination of the appointment of the DG of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Musa Daura.

“Mr. Daura has been directed to hand over to the most senior officer of the State Security Service until further notice.”

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has approved the appointment of Mr. Matthew Seiyefa as the Acting Director General of the Department of State Services.

This was sequel to the summary sacking of erstwhile DG, Lawal Daura, who was dismissed on Tuesday in the aftermath of the siege on the National Assembly by security operatives acting on his instruction.

Here is a brief profile of the Acting DG of DSS, Mr. Matthew Seiyefa:

• Seiyefa hails from Bayelsa State.

• Before his new appointment, he was the most senior director in the DSS, being an Assistant DG.

• He was also the Director, Institute of Security Studies, Abuja.

• With about 34 years of experience, Seiyefa has served in different capacities, including the State Director in Osun, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos.

• Seiyefa is also a member of the National Institute.

Takeover of National Assembly not authorised by Presidency, says Osinbajo

…promises to discipline all actors

The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday said the takeover of the National Assembly by security operatives earlier in the day was a gross violation of constitutional order.

He said the the development was not authorised by the Presidency.

Osinbajo’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, made the Acting President’s position known in a statement made available to journalists.

He promised that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in the siege would be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.

The statement read, “Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has described the unauthorised takeover of the National Assembly complex earlier today as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.

“According to him, the unlawful act, which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency, is condemnable and completely unacceptable.

“By this statement, Professor Osinbajo is consequently assuring Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in this travesty will be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action

NASS invasion: Jonathan reminds Nigerians of his democratic achievements

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday reposted one of his quotes from 2015 which described the All Progressives Congress as a party which had no regard for human rights or democracy.

The message was posted on Jonathan’s official Facebook page while men of the Department of State Services laid siege to the National Assembly.

The post read in part, “The choice before Nigerians in the coming election is simple: A choice between going forward and going backward; between the new ways and the old ways; between freedom and repression; between a record of visible achievements and beneficial reforms and desperate power seekers with empty promises.”

The post elicited 683 comments and was shared nearly 2,000 times on Facebook within four hours.

A large number of Jonathan’s 2.2 million followers hailed the former President for being a Democrat during his six years in office.

However, a few others berated Jonathan, reminding him of how under his watch in 2014, members of the House of Representatives were barred from gaining entry into the green chamber during a failed attempt to remove the then Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal.
