10 year-old girl killed in Ogba
« on: May 31, 2017, 12:36:22 AM »
The Rivers State Police Command and indigenes of Oboboru community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA are at loggerheads over the killing of a 10 year-old girl, Goodness Odum.

Odum was said to be sleeping when a stray bullet pierced the door and hit her on the head at about 6am on Saturday.

The girl, according to an eyewitness, died instantly.

The incident had left members of the community in shock as some of them pointed accusing finger at a team of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad that raided the place in search of some cult members.

The father of the girl, Mr. Ngozi Odum, who spoke through a Port Harcourt-based radio station, Nigeria Info, called on government to ensure that his daughter did not die in vain.

Odum urged government to expose the person that shot into his house and killed his daughter.

“I was inside my house between 5 and 6 in the morning on Saturday. I heard the sound of gunshots and a bullet penetrated the door and hit one of my daughters.

“I want the government to look into this so that the culprit would be exposed and made to face the law,” he said.

Also, the mother of the deceased, Mrs. Blessing Odum, alleged that the policemen threatened to shoot her when she accosted them killing her child.

She said, “When I was told that some policemen shot my daughter, I chased them (SARS operatives) up to the expressway.

“They stopped their vehicle and I held one of them and began to shout. But they warned that they would shoot me if I did not leave them.”

Speaking in a telephone interview with Southern City News, the paramount ruler of Oboboru community, Eze Azubuike  Dibia, also blamed the police.

Eze Dibia stated that based on his finding, it would be difficult for the police to deny the killing of the girl.

He said, “The police know that they killed the innocent girl. A young man was arrested in Port Harcourt by the police. They kept the man for three days and later, they brought him to the community.

“In the community, one of the SARS men released a gunshot behind the house of the suspect. Suddenly, a man came out of his house and began to shout that the police have killed his daughter.

“When the bullet hit the girl, she rushed out and slumped. The mother of the girl held one of the policemen. But she was warned to leave before they (policemen) drove away. We have been able to prove that they (police) killed the girl.”

But the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, told our correspondent that a stray bullet from cult boys killed the little Odum.

“It was a cult clash and a stray bullet from the cult boys hit the girl. It was not SARS. The mother of the child was only confused. The truth is that it was not SARS that killed the girl; it was a bullet from this rampaging boys.

“Investigation is ongoing and investigation is always discreet and at the end of it, anybody found wanting would be charged to court,” Omoni added.
