North-east Nigeria
« on: November 20, 2016, 03:17:07 AM »
North-east Nigeria is the area north of Benue River, bordered in the north and east by the countries of Niger, Cameroon and Chad, and in the West by the state boundaries of Kano and Kaduna. It includes the states of Plateau, Bauchi, Borno and the northern part of Gongola State. It, therefore, has such sharply contrasting landscapes as the picturesque Jos Plateau which rises to over 1,219 m, the Mandara Mountains running down the border with Cameroon, and the flat, low-lying, Lake Chad basin. Many centuries ago, when Lake Chad was a great deal larger, much of the north-east corner of Borno was under the waters of the lake.

The north-east also includes the wetlands of Hadejia-Nguru. In the far north of Borno State there are the ever-encroaching sands of the Sahara desert. One can see rolling dunes and oasis. The people are many tribes and religions, although they are predominantly Muslims, but this region is sparsely populated in with the south. Because of the distance, it is not often visited by people from Lagos except for well-known places like Jos and the Yankari Game Reserve. For this reason, many of the tourist sites are undeveloped, but the area should not be neglected by the keen traveller, as it has much to offer, and has some of the most scenic areas in Nigeria.
