My wedding Night… With… Vans Kere

At what age did you get married?

Often times, I jokingly tell people that I got married early in life when I was 32 years old.

As at the time you tied the knot, was it something you were prepared for?

I did not pen down an actual age I wanted to get married; it just happened.

So how did you meet your wife?

I met my wife while I was still at the Ambrose Alli University; I was studying law which is a five-year course. The first time I met my wife, I was 400Level first semester. My wife who was studying Microbiology was in 100Level but we both shared mutual friends. I remember the first day I met her, a friend of mine came over to my faculty and we were meant to go out together but he urged me to accompany him to his faculty before we went out. When we got to his faculty, he saw my wife and they talked and I signalled to my friend to introduce us. That was how we met. We became friends and along the line, I discovered we had similar interests.

What were those interests you share?

She is a very fashionable woman and I have a passion for fashion; so that was the first basis. She dresses very well and being someone who is in love with fashion, it endeared me to her. Whenever we met, we always talked a lot on various subjects although most of them bordered on fashion. I began to fall in love with her and the more time I spent with her, I noticed that she was a very lively person. She has a great sense of humour and she is slow to get angry. I noticed that there was chemistry between us. That was how it started.

You met your wife when cellular phones were not in vogue, neither was there anything like social media. How were you able to keep in touch with her after you graduated?

The beautiful thing about our relationship was that we both lived in Benin, so it made it easy for us to keep in touch. After my law school, I went for the mandatory NYSC but whenever I went home, I ensured that I visited her.

Was your relationship smooth all through the courtship stage?

It was not smooth. We really went through a lot before we eventually got married. As at the time we were dating, her brother was my very good friend and he was seriously against our relationship. There were so many hurdles we had to scale together. It was also tough on her and she heard a lot of stories about me.Her brother who was my friend believed that I wanted to use and dump her but I also wanted to prove to her brother that I really liked her and I was willing to make the relationship work. Her brother did not want her to be with me because he knew about my past.

What prompted you to propose to her?

It got to a stage when I knew she was the one. I had to advise myself that at that stage in life, it would be difficult for me to know who genuinely loved me. Since I had a girl back home that we had been through a lot together and I loved her, it was only reasonable to get married to her as soon as possible. I knew that if I let her go, I might not meet another girl that truly loved me. When I met my wife, I did not have a dime. I had just lost my father who was the breadwinner of the family; so while we were in school, I did not even have money to take her out. I had to advise myself to marry her.

Did you propose to her on bended knees?

I did not go on bended knees to propose to her. I got the ring, hid it in my arm while I tied it to a thread on a day that we were just casually talking in the room. I told her that I wanted to read her palm and when she presented it to me, I told her I wanted to show her a trick with the string. I instructed her to shut her eyes and open her palm wide. When she did that, I slid the ring onto her finger and asked her to marry me.
