Experts canvass banking of dental records
The National President, Nigerian Dental Association, Dr. Clement Olojede, has called on the Federal Government to formulate a policy that will enhance the safe keeping of dental records of patients in the nation's health system.

Olojede, who spoke at a press briefing organised by the association, in collaboration with Procter& Gamble, as part of activities leading to its Annual General Meeting to be held in Port Harcourt on Monday, stated that dental records were necessary for forensic procedures.

He noted that the embarrassment the nation experienced, when samples of blood and tissues samples of the Dana crash victims were taken out of the country for forensic examination, would have been avoided if there dental records had been kept.

Olojede said, "There are many disasters that have been managed with dental records. If Nigeria had a policy, such that dental records of Nigerians are taken at a particular point in time and stored for posterity, we could have easily identified many of the victims without having to take tissues samples abroad.

"We do not have to wait for disasters to happen again and identify victims before we start making case for dental profiling and recording. Government can take a stand today to avert another crisis like the last one."

Olojede also implored Nigerians to visit their dentists,at least twice, a year as a means of preventing other health complications.

According to him, poor oral health could lead to low sperm count in men and also increase the chances of a woman having babies with low birth weight.

He said, "Just the way you service your car, make sure you service your mouth by going to the dentist just twice a year. The general attitude of the Nigerian population is such that we wait for problems to happen before we seek solution. You do not have to wait till you have tooth ache, bleeding gum and infection before you visit the dentist."

Speaking on dental hygiene, another dentist, Dr. Victor Uwabuike, recommended brushing twice a day and a change of tooth brush every three months.

He said, "Change your tooth brush before the bristles have scattered. They cause more damage to the enamel and the tooth when you continue using them after the stipulated time."
