Thousands of women protest against Trump globally
« on: January 23, 2017, 02:42:35 AM »
Hundreds of women in the United States of America and other parts of the world on Saturday protested against newly inaugurated US President Donald Trump.

The protests were being staged across four continents: America, Europe, Africa and Asia.

The protests followed Trump’s oath of office taken on Friday.

Demonstrations against Trump’s derogatory attitude toward women took place in Washington, Sydney, London, Berlin, Tokyo, Paris, Stockholm and Nairobi.

Trump was being condemned for sexist comments and xenophobic language.

In Washington, there were celebrities and other speakers protesting against the new US President.

According to them, the demonstration was meant to air their opposition to Trump’s emergence.

Many of the protesters put on “pussy” hats, a reference to Trump’s admission to having committed sexual assault in a 2005 video that was released by the US-based Cable Network News before the US presidential election.

In the video, Trump was heard saying he grabbed women by the genitals without their consent.

In Sweden, thousands of people took to the streets in central Stockholm in support of the march in the US.

Similar protests were held in Norway, Finland, Denmark Austria and Kenya.

According to Al Jazeera, in Sydney, Australia’s biggest city, about 3,000 people, both men and women, gathered for a rally in Hyde Park before marching on the US consulate, while organisers said 5,000 people rallied in Melbourne.

In New Zealand, there were marches in four cities, involving around 2,000 people.

Elsewhere in Asia, hundreds of people joined protests in Tokyo, including many American expatriates.

In Sri Lanka, a small but vociferous group staged a protest outside the US Embassy.

Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the protesters denounced Trump’s comments on various issues including the environment, war and immigrants and claimed they could have an impact on the country.

“We are showing our solidarity with all the people throughout the world who are taking part in protests against President-elect(sic) Trump,” a leader of the United Socialist Party, Siritunga Jayasuriya, said.

No fewer than 100 people from political parties, civil rights and labour organisations protested for more than an hour as police stepped up security outside the embassy in Colombo.

However, there were others who welcomed Trump, with one of the Buddhist organisations placing a full-page newspaper advertisement wishing him long life.
