Adamawa teachers demand for execution of court verdict

The Nigerian Union of Teachers has asked the Adamawa State Government to execute the judgment of the National Industrial Court, which ordered it to pay N638m, the 29 months’ arrears of salaries owed 659 teachers whose employment was declared illegal by the state’s Post-Primary Schools Board.

Justice Nelson Ogbuanya of the National Industrial Court, Yola Division, gave the judgment in Yola on Thursday but noted that the verdict did not mean automatic termination of the teachers’ appointments.

Reacting to the judgment, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Adamawa State chapter, Rodney Nathan, said the judgment showed that there was still hope in the judiciary.

He also warned the government against appealing the judgment.

Nathan said, “We were disappointed when we learnt that the government would appeal the judgment. This judgment is indeed a welcome one as it has restored our confidence in the judiciary.

“We are reaching out to the government to ensure that it does the right thing to the people. We’ll try on our part as a union to ensure that the government sees wisdom in this judgment as we are ready to intervene and find an amicable solution to the issue.”

The state government could not be reached immediately for a reaction on Saturday.

Calls to the Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Sajoh, by our correspondent indicated that his lines were switched off.

The judgment, which was contained in a document obtained by our correspondent, also mandated the state government to ensure payment to the claimants within two months of the judgment.
