How hope ignites the passion of humanity

HOPE, the everliving four words that continue to ignite the passion of humanity.
Without hope, human beings are doomed. The existence of humanity is anchor on
hope. Both the physical and spiritual life are anchor on HOPE. Humanity hope for
better tomorrow. No honey today but there will be honey tomorrow as we are made to
believe. Our religions made us believe that there is heaven or Aljanat Firdaus, as my
muslim brothers will say. The HOPE to get to heaven or aljanat makes the believers to
be upright in their doing with the hope that they will be rewarded with heaven or
aljanat.

But what is HOPE? How does hope keep us in check? Do our leaders align our hopes
and aspirations with their own? Do we really achieve our hopes? And if we achieve
them(hopes), are they useful to us and our society at all?

According to Longman Dictionary of  Contemporary English, Hope means, “the
expectation of something happening as one wishes.” And according to Alexander
Pope, on An Essay on Man, “ Hope springs eternal in the human breast; Man never is,
but always to be blest.”

Today, the world is in turbulence situation but humanity hangs precariously on the
string of hope for better tomorrow. Nigeria is not an exception to the wildwind
swiping through the world, economically, politically, socially etc. Nigeria is going
through the hardest time in her chequered history. The populace are going through
hard time of recession self-inflicted on us by our myopic and deluded leaders. Yet we
continue to hope for godot to come.

Going down the memory lane, we can see how far HOPE has taken us for a ride.
In October 1979 when Alhaji Shehu Shagari became the Executive President, one of
his cardinal programmes was Austerity measure. We were told that if austerity
measure was fully implemented, our economy which was nose diving then will
bounce back gracefully. Nigerian shouted hureka. At the end of his four years, the
country was worse-off than when he started. FORLORN HOPE!

HOW HOPE IGNITES THE PASSION OF NIGERIANS

Then came the khaki boys of Buhari and Idiagbon in December 1983 with War against Indiscipline, War against Corruption and Economic Restructuring. By the time the maverick, tooth-gap smiling ‘Maradonna’ Ibrahim Babangida surreptiously took over in August 1985, the Economy was still begging for survival. However, some
sanity were restored to our social life during the period of BUHARI/IDIAGBON ERA. We learnt to queue. FORLORN HOPE!

Babangida administration came with his SAP(Structural Adjustment Programme) to revive our economy. We gave our support in the HOPE that tomorrow will be better.
Alas, we were worse for it. The economy plummeted with his failed political transition that gulped the country of its treasury. The Gulf war windfall was thrown into the abyss. Another DASHED HOPE!

Then came the black goggle man, the iron fisted Abacha. The gangrister Abacha had June 12 albatross on his neck. He could not revive the economy till death did him part with Nigeria. The country situation worsened off. FORLORN HOPE!

Nature passed the baton of leadership to the gentle and unassuming Abdul Salam with noting but restoring democracy(?) to Nigeria. The one year spent witnessed the calm of strain nerve, let-wait-and-see-what-happen attitude of the populace.

The mantle fell on Baba Iyabo, from prison to president, to restore Nigerians dignity and economic fortune. While baba toiled day and night to salvage the economy, he succeeded in repaying Nigeria’s bogus debt. This put the country back on the road to economic Eldorado. But Baba failed in his transition. Baba handed to willing but ineffective Yar- Adua. We were back to square one. The country was pillaged front and back, left and right as yar-Adua was bed ridden. FORLORN HOPE!
